Royal Military Academy of Belgium
Haris Balta is a Research Scientist at the Unmanned Vehicle Center at the Royal Military Academy (RMA) of Belgium. He received his Engineering degree in Information Technology from the University of Mostar and a Postgraduate Master's degree in the field of Robotics and Intelligent Systems from the University Federico II Naples in 2008, and 2012 respectively. He is defending his PhD thesis at the Royal Military Academy of Belgium in the field of UAV-UGV collaborative 3D environmental mapping. He is currently working on two large scale European FP7 projects: ICARUS on search and rescue (SAR) robotics and TIRAMISU on humanitarian demining (both coordinated by the RMA). Together, these research projects gather nearly 50 partners (academia, industry and SMEs) from all over Europe, working on bringing robotic solutions to real-life humanitarian applications. His current research activities include development of heterogeneous robotic systems (UAV & UGV) and bringing such systems to real-life humanitarian applications (humanitarian demining, search and rescue, and remote inspection). He has received several international awards from institutions like the IEEE Robotic & Automation Society, Japan Atomic Energy Agency, European Commission. He is an certified and internationally operational UAV pilot (both fixed-wing and rotary wing).
